Seven Truths

about Rest

Lin Wills

Jesus is sitting down by a well, resting because He’s tired after a long walk in the hot sun. A Samaritan woman comes to the well, and Jesus asks her to give Him a drink of water. Jesus was only doing what he saw his Father doing (John 5:7). He was in alignment with His Father all the time.

Activity and achievement can make us feel better about ourselves and our own sense of worth, but our real true sense of worth can only be found in God. That is why closeness and intimacy with God is so important.

We aren’t meant to strive. Striving is like saying to God, “I can do this!” We were made to rely on Him and rest in Him, and allow His Holy Spirit to move through us, being ready and available at His promptings – wherever that might be and in what context.

Worship, pray, listen, and obey. Jesus didn’t make a move without His Father leading. He was never in a hurry, never rushing around. He was perfectly in tune with His Father’s heart, and He was at “rest” in that.
